Program Overview

The High School outreach program is funded through the National Science Foundation by a grant in support of the scientific research project:

A proteomic approach to understanding cytoprotective biogenic sulfur production in sea-ice diatoms
PIs: Michael G. Janech, Ph.D., Asst. Prof. MUSC and Peter A. Lee, Ph.D. Research Associate. College of Charleston Co-PI: Giacomo "Jack" DiTullio, Ph.D., Professor, College of Charleston

Objective

The objective of the high school polar outreach project is to develop an information resource for secondary teachers that can be utilized as a tool to enhance teaching in subject matter that deals with polar environments. Furthermore, the outreach program aims to link teachers with university faculty to facilitate the interpretation of complex scientific information which is often underrepresented in textbooks. Dissemination of information is an important feature of the program which is why a web-based teaching tool is being targeted for development.
